Recycling/Restoring Paschal Candle

20/2/2010

Two questions came up the other day in conversation-can a Paschal candle be recycled?
And my previous vicar decided a few years ago to have a very 'picturesque' style of Paschal candle, what is the best way to restore the candle to its full beauty after burning wax had dripped all over the design?

Surely it is not correct to use a paschal candle twice!

Personally, I think the the candles which at present are very fashionable with elaborate designs on them are most unsuitable as usually before trinity Sunday wax has ruined the large intrusive design(s). It is much better to have the older more simple designs. Those candles can be kept very smart looking.

I was going to suggest reference to my contribution on extinguishing the Paschal Candle and recycling it for use as ordinary white candles.

Another alternative would be to carefully removed the design as use as above. I don't think it would be acceptable to recycle it as a new Paschal Candle since it defeats the point of bringing "new light" into the church as well as the fact that it has been blessed.

Our Paschal Candle is an oil filled one and has been used for a number of years now, are you saying that our church does not receive Christ's light?

The oil filled Paschal Candle sounds a novelty. It must be very leaky when the 5 grains of incense representing the 5 wounds are pushed into it.

The Light of Christ to which we reply thanks be to God, The answer to your last point is in Revelation Chapter 22 verse 5
