A Return to the Tridentine Rite?
|
20/9/09 Since many Anglo-Catholic churches in the UK use the
Roman Missal and follow the Roman Lectionary, I was wondering if any of these
churches had also re-instituted the Extraordinary Rite (ie, the pre-Vatican II
form of the mass) in either Latin or English following the publication of the
Pope's Moto Proprio on Holy Cross Day last year? |

I
would ask those who want to use the extra-ordinary rite whether they think
it is appropriate to set aside the work of the Vatican Council in what can
only be described as congregationalism. May I suggest we all re-read the
documents of the Vatican Council, and renew our studies in what we think
Eucharist really is! As for the English Missal that book has never had any
authority in heaven , earth or indeed any other place. |

The
Tridentine Rite incorporates the Holy Mystery that is Our Lords Sacrifice
where the Canon of the mass is almost silently said by the Celebrant this
gives the aura that is not found with other celebration and especially not
in a concelebration. |

| I was
brought up in an old fashioned AC parish where much of the Tridentine Mass
was quietly interpolated into Cranmer's communion service. I still remember the thrill I felt when, serving at Mass one weekday, I realized the vicar was saying the offertory prayers and Canon in Latin! However, I didn't experience the full Tridentine Rite until I was taken to an Assumption Day High Mass at St Magnus, London Bridge, and after that, despite the vernacular propers, nothing else would ever really do. I'd love to think the old rite had come back to St Magnus, and to so many other Anglican parishes - those that survive - which had adopted the full Roman rite by the 50's and 60's |

There is a picture of what is obviously a Tridentine Celebration from Pusey House on the the back of the current issue of FORWARD which would indicate that many congregations prefer this rite to multi concelebration. Happy New Year to the brethren we are becoming truly international - Greetings
