SERVICE OF THE WORD
Hello everyone,
I would like your advice on how many servers would be appropriate for a
substantial celebration that will take the form of a Service of the Word.
I suppose this would be not be so unlike Evensong or Mattins, and I've
often seen a crucifer used for those, but would it be appropriate to also
add acolytes - to add to the sense of occasion a little more at this
special service?
Thanks very much,
C.

Festal sung evensong used to consist of MC, Crucifer, two acolytes, thurifer and boat boy and at least 4 banner bearers and possibly an extra server for a visiting priest.
Hope that helps

It would be appropriate to add Acolytes and Crucifer, as is the format for Solemn Evensong.

In addition the above information
If there is a festival evensong ending with the Te Deum than it is appropriate to have TWO Thurifers during the singing of the Te Deum

I cannot see anything wrong in having acolytes at any service also the crucifer you could have two sets of acolytes forming an escort with the cross in the
middle.

Hello,
I am the former Hon. Secretary of the Chapter of Our Lady & St.
Richard, Bognor Regis, in the Diocese of Chichester, and a Hon. Life Member of the Guild.
I would like to suggest that in addition to the Crucifer, two acolytes would add "dignity" to the procession in & out, and they should also stand either side of the Reader when the Gospel or the final New Testament lesson is read.
This procedure is carried out at the service of Nine Lessons & Carols at the Parish Church of
St. Mary-the-Virgin, Felpham, West Sussex, the leading Anglo-Catholic church in the Deanery.
I hope that this suggestion is not too late, and that it might be helpful. Good luck with your planning.
Kind regards,
David Booker |

Hello again,
Thank you everyone for your replies and suggestions, I am arranging for a minimum of crucifer and
acolytes - may have to stop short of two thurifers on this particular occasion.
David, you sum up the whole thing brilliantly with the word "dignity".
Thanks again,
