Receiving in One Kind

15/8/09

A question has occurred to me now that we are receiving Our Lord in one kind only.I am of course aware that this is still Him fully.

What are the roots of this tradition? I know that only recently Rome administered solely His Body (although not everywhere and certainly not in Santiago de Compostela, Spain where I visit annually ) Was it because the wine used was so rare and valuable or perhaps for practical reasons?

Dear GSS,

I am surprised to find a message from the Forum that says: "A question has occurred to me now that we are receiving Our Lord in one kind only. I am of course aware that this is still Him fully."

My understanding is that the norm is still to follow the prescriptions of the BCP of 1662 in UK and 1979 in USA - that Holy Communion should be given in both kinds.

Dear G.SS.
Unable currently to get to church, the Blessed Sacrament is brought to me by Fr Josif, vicar of St Thomas` , Purston ( Wakefield Dio.) in one kind.....and I am on the verge of raising the question of it being tinctured with the Blessed wine. He is the priest, he will know.

My question is in abeyance for the moment with the added furore that comes to my door with friends from three surrounding parishes; many of whom are in dispute with their vicar or vicaress at what they perceive as an effrontery to Christ and deprivation to them, in the new Orders ....are they really ordered to do it ?....during the swine fever anxiety. Sadly, the talk is of unseemly arguments; of going to the altar rail and declining to accept it untinctured or of continuing to kneel as in expectation of the chalice ; even of boycotting church until Order is restored. For those with no confidence in the validity of bread and wine from under the hand and blessing of a woman, this is an interesting turn of events...but does not go un - noticed by the unknowing, uncaring public; who think it an un-Christian nonsense.

The fullness of the Blessed Sacrament Celebrated by a Priest of direct succession from Christ's Apostles appointed at his own Direction should under no circumstances ever be boycotted, turned away, nor the subject for unseemly demonstrations. Priest and people must find a way for it to be given in Full and received with every dignity afforded it.....and that giving and that receiving should be seen and spoken of happening to be sure to create an atmosphere of Great Respect and Importance to us......as indeed it is. Worship of every kind has in too many places sunk to the equivalent of a little something that makes people feel nice ; or as an optional entertainment.

Please raise the level of this unhappy nagging and niggling into an opportunity to rethink; debate ; raise it to a higher level and restore the recognition, the dignity and approach toward the presence of Christ in the form of Bread and Wine, bringing it into perspective and acknowledged Importance. It will not be more lace on the cottas of server nor of Priest that will lift either Christian Worship nor Our Lord's Presence from low down of the Nation's list of priorities; but Dignity, energy in following our lay or priestly Calling and the restoration of a long and decent period of preparation from Baptism to Confirmation.....a Lifestyle. This means thoroughly educated clergy with a Calling to Serve and put that C who do not depend solely on a 9.a.m to 5 p.m. day ;their answer - phones and computers and who regularly preach well - thought - out and prepared Sermons; who over - see well - run Sunday Schools and resist giving the impression that calls on his time and energy by parishioners are a drain on his time and energies....not even when they are. He is Christ's most visible representative and he is both the Celebrant and the Guardian of Christ in form of Bread and Wine.

I have been to 3 different Anglo-Catholic churches in the last 2 weeks and each time I have received in 2 kinds so please we are not all receiving in one kind only.

A memory from my Anglican days - one Sunday in the mid 60's (Vatican II had just ended) while at London University, I attended Mass with a RC friend at St Magnus the Martyr, London Bridge. In those days St Magnus was perhaps a little less Roman than in Fr Fynnes-Clinton's time, but was still essentially tridentine, and a sizeable proportion of the congregation - myself included - habitually received in one kind. My RC friend happily received in both kinds and lectured me afterwards on my "extremism"! I can still hear him saying "Graham - one kind!! How could you?" as we made our way up the hill to the pub after Mass! They were good days.

I refer all the commentators on this page to go to the link below for the reason why some Parishes use only one Kind:

Here in the Blackburn Diocese we are following the Bishop's instruction to administer Holy Communion in one kind only during the swine flu pandemic. I believe that this originated in advice from the Archbishops of Canterbury & York. I am told, however, by people who have been to churches in other dioceses, that elsewhere congregations are receiving in both kinds and either never applied any restriction or have given it up. Can members please indicate what the situation is in their own dioceses (CofE)?

St Eds and Ips: the Bishop followed the Archbishops' advice at first, but A-C parishes generally continued to receive in both kinds, offering the option of one kind. However, at the first new Diocesan Synod last month at the Eucharist we received in both kinds, the Bishop had decided it was now acceptable to do so. When I worked in an RC school, at school Masses we only ever received in one kind, both RCs and Anglicans - the Anglican Bishop of the particular Diocese gave permission for the Reserved Sacrament to be brought to school by the priest from the local church for the Anglicans to receive (the RC priest having consecrated' theirs' during the Mass).
